Once upon a time you really only had one choice in a desktop operating system, assuming you wanted to be compatible with everything, that is. Sure, there were other options, but often they didn’t offer the same functionality or only worked for specific tasks. Today, things are much different.
Linux, for example, has become much more user friendly, and macOS has become a major player offering compatibility with a wide range of software that was once out of its reach, especially in the world of gaming and business. And then you have Windows 10, the latest version of Microsoft’s long running and popular operating system platform. But which one is really best for you to use?
Today I am here to tell you that I believe that overall Windows 10 from Microsoft will offer you a better overall experience on your computer than any of the alternatives. Don’t worry, I will explain.
The Problems With Windows
First, let’s take a minute to look at a few problems with Windows that make many people believe it isn’t right for them.
- Complicated – Windows 10 can be complicated for some users out there. That is because it is so powerful and has so many features available to you. The fact is it is simpler to use than Linux and while macOS is easy to use, if you want to do anything fancy it is every bit as complicated as Windows, Apple just leaves that part out of their marketing campaign.
- Viruses and Malware – I’m not going to lie, there are a ton more viruses and malware out there for Windows. Do you know why? The reason is because Windows is so popular. Sure you don’t have the problem with macOS or Linux, but they are installed on so few machines most virus creators don’t bother, although this has been changing
- Bugs and Issues – Many people complain about the bugs and other problems they find in Windows. That’s true, there are bugs. But guess what, there are bugs in the other operating systems as well. It is just a part of software. Apple is forever patching their operating system just like Windows and Linux does the same thing. Of course, you hear more about bugs in Windows again because of the popularity.
All in all, these problems are no different from any other operating system, and with a few good practices, can easily be dealt with even by computer users who aren’t savvy. For example, always run the Windows updates to get the latest bug fixes and maintain good quality virus software and you won’t have to worry about a majority of your problems.
Reasons Why Windows 10 Is the Way to Go
Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why I believe Windows 10 is the best operating system of choice for your desktop. I believe that after you see this list, you will agree with me and understand why you should stick with Windows.
Reason One – More Freedom
Now I’m sure Linux fans will disagree with me on this one, and it is true, Linux offers you the most freedom with your computer. However, compared to the walled garden of Apple, using Windows 10 gives you a huge amount of freedom to customize your experience and install what you want, when you want. On top of that, there is tons of software to make it even better, so if Windows won’t do it out of the box, I’m betting you can find an application to help you do it in a matter of minutes.
Reason Two – Business Compatibility
This reason extends more for the business users out there. Businesses have long been using Microsoft servers and desktops to get work done. Microsoft Exchange, for example, is the top email server in the world. For best results on your business network, you should stick with Windows machines. Sure the other platforms will connect and work, but you won’t get the same amount of functionality without a lot of work, that is. That, of course, costs money. So stick with Windows and you just won’t have to worry about it.
Reason Three – Software Availability
The fact is there is more software, both open source and closed, available for Windows. The reason is its popularity. More developers create software for Windows than any other. The end result is you have way more choices for this platform than you do any other. If you are looking for new software and you love trying new apps, Windows is definitely the way to go.
Reason Four – Popularity
I have already mentioned the popularity of the platform several times. That popularity works for you, in the end. Because more people use it, more people know how to use it and even fix it if something goes wrong. This can help you, especially if you aren’t very computer savvy. You see, if you need help with your computer more people will be able to fix your computer. Take Apple, for example, there are far less people that know how to work on the system. Often you have to take it back to Apple and pay their ridiculous prices to get it fixed if it isn’t still under warranty.
Reason Five – Price
Sure, Apple makes their OS available for free, but remember you have already paid the Apple tax on that computer that you bought. So you have already paid a lot more money for your computer. It’s not just the operating system you have to worry about, you see. There are so many computer manufacturers out there that you can easily find a Windows-based computer for far less money than you will ever find a machine running macOS. If budget is a worry for you, then you definitely to go with a Windows machine.
Reason Six – Gaming
Do you like playing video games on your computer? If so, then you definitely want to go with a Windows machine. Using a Windows machine will give you access to many more games compared to other platforms. I have to admit, things have gotten better for Macs and gaming and there are even a few more out there today for Linux, but nothing compared to the games available on the Windows platform. On top of that, you can easily upgrade your budget gaming desktop to move with the times so you aren’t locked into a certain type of hardware as you are with an Apple computer.
Reason Seven – Familiarity
Unless you are in the minority and have used Mac products your whole entire life, then Windows 10 will be much more familiar to you than the other options. Sure, things do look different in Windows 10, but the same basic functionality and locations are still there, even if the look of the operating system has changed. Sure, some things have been moved around, meaning you will have to learn a little bit here and there, overall you will find that it is easy to make the transition as everything is stored in pretty much the same place as it has been for years now.
Reason Eight – Mobile Friendly
Windows 10 is designed to work on desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. That means you can upgrade all your devices and only have to use one system. Pretty cool, huh? At the same time, if you use a Microsoft account, then you will instantly have access to all your files and settings across all your devices. That means you can basically pick right up where you left off on one device when you pick up another device. Honestly, this is one of my favorite aspects of Windows 10.
New but Familiar
The fact is that while Windows 10 is new, it is still a very familiar experience. You can easily upgrade to Windows 10 and get to work without much of a learning curve at all. So if you want to get something new but make sure you don’t have to spend hours learning something new, then Windows 10 is the way to go.
Parting Thoughts
As you can see there are many great reasons for you to choose Windows 10 as your operating system of choice. Overall, it is easy to use, provides a slick interface that looks great and is fun to work on, and you get the most compatibility you could ever hope for when you use it. On top of that, if you are a gamer, you definitely want to go with Windows, as all games are released for the Windows platform while the same can’t be said for macOS and even more so Linux.
At the end of the day, you want something that just works and gives you the most choice when using your computer. Windows 10 does just that. Sure, if you want to do more complicated things there is a learning curve, but you will find that anywhere. Out of the box it just works and you will be able to do just about anything you want using your computer.
So what are you waiting for? I think it is time for you to upgrade or switch back to Windows 10 so you can have the best computing experience possible.
What do you think? I’m sure many of you out there disagree with me, and that’s okay. After all, it’s what makes the world goes round. What operating system do you think is best for your computer? Which one do you enjoy using the most? Let me know what you think about this in the comments below and if you have any questions about my reasoning, please ask away and I will try my best to answer you.
